Editorial: Chehalis Tribe helps diversify economy

"The resort planned along Interstate 5 at Grand Mound by the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation will be inside Thurston County, but should also benefit the economy in Lewis County.

The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs last week approved the tribes plans to construct the $85 million resort on 43 acres it has designated as federal trust land, giving the tribe jurisdiction over it.

We commend the Chehalis tribe for its effort and foresight in pursuing and bringing about the resort and for avoiding making it just another tribal gambling establishment. Rather, the tribe is looking to diversify the local economy, both for its 700 members and non-Indians."
