Native leaders and the mother of an 18-year-old Metis boy who was fatally shot by police in Winnipeg, Manitoba, are upset after a review cleared the officers of wrongdoing.

Matthew Dumas was killed in January 2005. Police said he fit the description of a robbery suspect and allegedly pulled a weapon on officers who were chasing him. The officer who fired the fatal shot was also Metis.

Carol Chartrand, Matthew's mother, wasn't surprised that the review cleared the officers. Matthew's sister said the family is considering a lawsuit. The Southern Chiefs' Organization also criticized the report.

An inquest into Matthew's death is pending.
