Canada Natives a quarter of new HIV/AIDS cases

Native people account for nearly a quarter of new HIV/AIDS cases in Canada, according to a new report from the Public Health Agency.

Of all the HIV positive tests performed in 2005, 22.7 percent were from Natives, the report said. The majority, or 53 percent, of new infections were from injecting drug users.

According to the report, Natives account for 7.5 percent of persons living with HIV in Canada at the end of 2005. The infection rate is nearly three times higher than among non-Natives.
