Red Lake citizens challenge GOP on sovereignty

About 40 members of the Red Lake Nation in Minnesota attended a fundraiser of the Beltrami County Republicans and questioned the candidates on tribal sovereignty.

Tribal members showed up because U.S. House GOP candidate Michael Barrett wants the state to assert jurisdiction over the waters of Red Lake. He had scheduled a press conference during the fundraiser to call attention to the debate.

Barrett didn't show up but that didn't stop the tribal members from questioning the GOP on sovereignty and other issues. That took the Republicans, including U.S. Rep. Mark Kennedy, who is running for U.S. Senate, by surprise.

County Republicans were upset because Barrett didn't tell them about his news conference. Some also said they do not support his position.
