Lawmakers won't fund Indian education positions

The Nebraska Legislatures Appropriations Committee refused to fund the salaries of two Indian education positions.

The state Education Department sought money for the positions after Gov. Dave Heineman (R) failed to ask for it in his budget. Lawmakers decided it wasn't a priority either, and approved money for a new Hispanic education position instead.

Education Commissioner Doug Christensen asked for money for an Indian education director and an Indian drug prevention specialist. Currently, the positions are funded by a federal grant but the money runs out after this year, he said.
