Navajo Nation president blasts BIA budget cuts

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. said the Bush administration failed to consult tribes when it cut the Bureau of Indian Affairs budget.

Shirley spoke at the tribal budget advisory committee meeting in Washington, D.C., last week. He said the BIA has ignored the recommendations made by the tribes.

President Bush's fiscal year 2007 budget includes $50 million in cuts in BIA school construction, elimination of the $16 million Johnson-OMalley education grants and elimination of the $33 million Urban Indian Health Program.
