The Bureau of Indian Affairs is investigating an attack that was made at the powwow grounds of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma.

About 50 people were involved. Several were assaulted and some vehicles were vandalized, the BIA said. No one was seriously injured although axes and chainsaws were apparently used at one point.

A woman said the attack occurred at an Aparaho religious ceremony. She said the assailants were from Wyoming and were upset that the ceremony was being held in Oklahoma. The Northern Arapaho Tribe is based in Wyoming.

In related Cheyenne-Arapaho news, Darrell Flyingman, the former chairman of the tribal business committee, was elected as the first tribal governor. Tribal members adopted a new constitution to establish the position under a four branch government.
