Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe discusses recognition

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the town of Mashpee sat down for the first time since the tribe won preliminary federal recognition.

Tribal and town officials said the meeting was productive. They plan to issue a joint statement today.

The tribe has agreed not to press any land claims or open a casino on Cape Cod. The town wants to discuss certain issues before endorsing the tribe's recognition bid.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is due to finalize the tribe's recognition in March 2007.
