Task force recommends help for Native meth addicts

A task force headed by the wife of Alberta Premier Ralph Klein released its report on the methamphetamine crisis in the province.

The report made six recommendations to prevent Natives from becoming addicted to meth. It said the government should extend prevention programs to First Nations, reach out to Native youth and create partnerships with Native communities.

The three other recommendations dealt with treatment for Native meth addicts. It called on the government to ensure Natives have access to treatment programs, to rescind a policy that forced urban Natives to seek care on reserves and to establish more treatment centers on reserves.

"There are no detox or treatment facilities located on Aboriginal reserves and limited detox capacity outside of the two major centers," the report stated.

A copy of the report can be found at http://www.gov.ab.ca/premier/cmeth.
