First Nations have highest smoking rate in Canada

The majority of Native people in Canada smoke, according to Health Canada.

The agency says 60 percent of First Nations people smoke. That's far higher than the 20 percent of the general population who smokes.

Health Canada says it is working to reduce smoking on reserves by encouraging tobacco retailers to keep products out of sight. But CBC News says most Indian businesses don't cover up their tobacco products.
