Tohono O'odham youth learn farming traditions

Youth in the Tohono O'odham Nation village of Cucklebur are learning the tribe's farming traditions through a community garden.

Youngsters started planting the first seeds at the garden, a joint effort of the tribe, the Department of Agriculture and the Hohokam Resource, Conservation and Development nonprofit. The USDA chipped in $10,000 for the project.

"We want this project to help our youth reconnect with the culture," Nina Jose, the chairwoman of the Sif Oidak District, told The Arizona Daily Star.
