Republican makes Red Lake a campaign issue

Republican Doug Lindgren says he will eliminate state funding for schools on the Red Lake Reservation and will claim state sovereignty over Red Lake if he is elected to the Minnesota Legislature.

"We are spending taxpayer money, Minnesota taxpayer money, to fund schools that should be getting their money from the federal government," Lindgren tells Minnesota Public Radio.

He is equally adamant about Red Lake, most of which is controlled by the tribe. He says the state should control all of the waters.

Lindgren's campaign has tribal leaders upset but confident. Red Lake Chairman Floyd Jourdain Jr. says the tribe's claim to the lake will be upheld if it goes to court.

On the other side is a group called Citizens for Truth in Government. The group took out a full-page ad in The Bemidji Pioneer that supported Lindgren's stance on Red Lake.
