First Nations give up whaling rights for treaty

The Maa-nulth First Nations of British Columbia gave up whaling rights for 25 years as part of a a treaty signed over the weekend.

The tribes vowed to return to hunting after the Makah Nation in Washington resumed its hunt. But First Nations leaders agreed not to pursue the issue as part of a land and cash settlement.

Huu-ay-aht Hereditary Chief Tom Mexsis Happynook, however, said the agreement reserves the right to resume hunting in the future.
