State to buy land near Old Chief Joseph gravesite

The state of Oregon will buy 60 acres near the grave of Old Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Tribe.

The $4.1 million purchase would protect the land near the site. The Nez Perce Tribe and other tribes opposed a housing development at the start of the Nez Perce National Historic Trail.

Old Chief Joseph was the father of Chief Joseph, who led his people on a 1,500-mile journey that ended near Canada to resist being relocated to a reservation.

The state could turn the land into a new state park. The gravesite is under the management of the National Park Service.
