Haskell students march against Columbus Day

Students at Haskell Indian Nations University in Kansas held their second annual protest against Columbus Day on Monday.

Chanting “We will never go away, this is Indigenous Peoples Day” and “Fight imperialism, fight genocide, no more Columbus Day," the students marched in Lawrence to the Haskell campus. “We’re still here, we’re still resisting," senior Jimmy Beason told The Lawrence Journal World.

Organizers hoped to spread their efforts beyond Haskell and asked the city of Lawrence to proclaim Columbus Day to "Indigenous Peoples Day." But the mayor said it would be up to state lawmakers to make any changes.
