Pala Band continues long fight against landfill near sacred site

The Pala Band of Mission Indians continues to fight a proposed landfill in Gregory Canyon, a sacred site in southern California.

The tribe wants to protect Chokla, a mountain that is one of the homes of Takwic, a sacred figure. The tribe says the landfill will destroy the area and cause pollution.

Gregory Canyon Ltd. has been trying to build the landfill for 17 years. After numerous lawsuits and appeals, the company is seeking another operating permit.

The tribe has filed an appeal with the Department of Environmental Health that will be heard on Wednesday. Public comments are being accepted until until April 21.
