Opponents of 'Fighting Sioux' name not ready to give up fight

Opponents of the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo at the University of North Dakota aren't giving up efforts to drop the controversial symbol once and for all.

Most Indian students and Indian alumni, along with most faculty, oppose the use of the name. They thought the battle ended when the school voted to retire the name but then lawmakers passed a bill to keep it alive.

“I don’t think it’ll ever be over,” UND senior Emmy Scott, who testified against the bill, told The Grand Forks Herald. “I believe the law will be challenged on its unconstitutionality. And we’re going to keep fighting.”

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem hasn't said how the new law will affect a settlement with the NCAA to that required UND to eliminate the name by November of this year unless both the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation and the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe support it.
