Editorial: Poarch Creeks funnel money thru shady system

'New records showing discreetly given political contributions from Indian casinos fighting the expansion of non-Indian gambling in Alabama underscore how deceived the public has been with Alabama's historically lax campaign finance laws.

The more political action committees bounce their political donations among PACs, the harder it is to identify the original givers.

The Birmingham News reported this week that the Poarch Band of Creek Indians based near Atmore gave $350,000 to the Republican State Leadership Committee in Virginia before the November 2010 election and another $200,000 this past January.

The tribe gave a total of $2.8 million in Alabama's 2010 campaign season, according to an earlier report by The News.

The RSLC group, in turn, pumped more than $1 million into Alabama campaigns in 2010 largely through the Alabama Republican Party and PACs aimed at helping Republicans take over the Alabama Legislature."
