Non-Native offender denied parole after aboriginal hearing

A non-Native offender was denied parole after a three-hour hearing led by a Native elder on Wednesday.

Gregory Bromby, who was born in Haiti, had to face the father of his victim and answer questions about the 1994 murder of Tara Manning, who was 15 when she was raped and stabbed to death in Quebec. Michael Manning said being at the hearing was difficult.

"How would you feel sitting less than 10 feet away from the person that slaughtered your daughter? Not a day that goes by that I don't think about my baby," Manning told CBC News.

The Parole Board of Canada says anyone who demonstrates a commitment to Native programs and spiritual activities can request an aboriginal parole hearing.
