First Tribal Leader Education Roundtable set in South Dakota





The first in a series of Tribal Leader Education Roundtables will be held tomorrow in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Tribal leaders are meeting with officials from the Education Department and the Interior Department. They also will hear from William Mendoza, the director of the new White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education, which President Barack Obama created by executive order.

Additional meetings will be held in Norman, Oklahoma; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Seattle, Washington. The schedule for tomorrow's roundtable, which will be webcast at bit.ly/AIANE follows:

8:45 a.m. - White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education director William Mendoza, Bureau of Indian Education director Keith Moore and Office of Indian Education director Joyce Silverthorne deliver opening remarks.

9 a.m. - Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation chairman Tex Hall and Chickasaw Nation lieutenant governor Jefferson Keel join tribal and community leaders to discuss a new education taskforce for tribal leaders.

12 p.m. - Senior Administration officials and Community leaders review public comments and elected tribal leaders discuss educational attainment for AI/AN students. (Note: CLOSED PRESS)
