Judge dismisses lawsuit aimed at keeping 'Fighting Sioux'

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit aimed at preserving the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo at the University of North Dakota.

Members of the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation sued the NCAA over a settlement that requires UND to eliminate its Indian imagery unless it secures tribal support. The Committee for Understanding and Respect said the tribe should have been included in the arrangement.

“As a voluntary, private organization, the NCAA was free to implement the policies it saw fit for governing its events, no matter how provident or improvident those policies may have been," Judge Ralph Erickson wrote in the decision, The Grand Forks Herald reported.
