Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin (R) is seeking to establish a single tax rate for tobacco sales in Indian Country.

Existing compacts provide for five different rates, with lower rates near the state borders. But Fallin wants the same rate -- $1.03 per pack -- for every tribe, regardless of location.

"Basically, at the end of five years, in Oklahoma almost every tribe will be at that rate," Fallin's general counsel, Steve Mullins, told Oklahoma Watch.

The $1.03 per pack is significantly higher than the border sales tax rate of 6 cents or 26 cents per pack. In exchange, Fallin will share half of the revenues with the tribes, Oklahoma Watch reported.
