Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Washington) plans to introduce a bill to end the tax-exempt status of the NFL.

Cantwell made the announcement at a press conference after the Tribal Unity Impact Days briefing on Capitol Hill this morning. She said she was taking action because the NFL has done little to address the racist name of the Washington franchise.

"The NFL needs to join the rest of America in the 21st century," Cantwell said today. “We can no longer tolerate this attitude towards Native Americans. This is not about team tradition. It is about right and wrong.”

The NFL took in about $10 billion last year, according to USA Today. But it's considered a non-profit, a status that lawmakers from both parties have questioned over the years.

The National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball have given up their non-profit status, The Hill reported.
