Indian National Finals Rodeo requested $527K from NFL team

The Indian National Finals Rodeo requested $527,000 from the Original Americans Foundation just four days before breaking ties with the unusual charity set up by the Washington NFL team, The Washington Post reports.

The money would have been used to help put on the rodeo, held every November in Las Vegas, Nevada. In exchange, the team would have received coverage on banners, programs, t-shirts and other materials, the Post reported.

But a former chairman of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin convinced rodeo commissioners to end their partnership with the team. Gerald Danforth agreed to help raise money for the event but otherwise his tribe, nor the Oneida Nation of New York, did not offer financial compensation, officials told the Post.

The Washington NFL team announced the Original Americans Foundation in early 2014 and some tribes and Indian organizations have accepted the group's funds. But many others have rejected the money, calling it an attempt to stifle criticism of the team's racist mascot.

The foundation is unusual in that it has not announced a governing board or outlined its grant policies, nor has it disclosed the source of its funds.
