More inmates in federal and state prisons are testing positive for HIV and developing AIDS-related illnesses but fewer are dying, according to Department of Justice statistics released on Sunday.

From 1995 to 1999, the number of prisoners testing positive for HIV rose by 1,500, to nearly 25,800. A total of 10,000 AIDS cases were confirmed at the end of 1999.

Some 242 prisoners died in 1999 of AIDS-related causes, down from a high of 1,010 in 1995.
