Vote could be delayed on judge

The Senate Judiciary Committee today will probably delay a vote on controversial appeals court nominee Charles Pickering.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said he plans to ask the committee to delay a vote by a week. The delay would avert an expected party line vote against Pickering, a federal judge nominated to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

President Bush on Wednesday defended Pickering and criticized Democrats for playing political games with his nomination. White House spokesperson also said the civil rights records of Senate members might be questioned.

Pickering has defenders on both sides of the civil rights debate.
