Udall also says Navajo water settlement too costly

Rep. Tom Udall (D-New Mexico) said he agrees that cost estimates of the Navajo Nation's water settlement are way too high.

The current price tag for the deal is put at $1.2 billion. Udall and Sen. Pete Domenici (R-New Mexico) said the number has to be reduced before they can support it.

Domenici also said he will not support the settlement if a water pipeline to the off-reservation city of Gallup isn't included. He has told the tribe in public and in a letter to Navajo President Joe Shirley Jr. of his concerns.

The settlement involves the tribe's water rights on the San Juan River.
