Turtle Mountain Chippewa judge allows election

A judge for the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota ruled on Monday that the tribal election will be held today as planned.

Chairman Leon Morin, who is not on the ballot, tried to stop the election. He said a rival who was convicted of a misdemeanor 20 years ago should be disqualified.

Voters did approve an amendment barring any convicts from office. But the judge said it could not retroactively apply to Ron Peltier, one of the two top vote-getters in the recent primary.
