The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota passed a resolution on Thursday aimed at restoring federal funds to its Si Tanka University.

The resolution states that the on-reservation campus of Si Tanka is separate from the off-reservation campus. The distinction could allow the Bureau of Indian Affairs to release federal funds for the on-reservation students. Right now the BIA is holding back the funds because the combined enrollment on and off reservation is less than 51 percent Indian.

The tribe purchased the former Huron University to function as the off-reservation campus for Si Tanka. But Huron's longstanding financial problems have continued to be a burden. The Huron campus has missed payroll and students say their financial aid checks are bouncing.
