Washington hotel a good fit for tribes, company

A new tribally-financed hotel in Washington, D.C., is helping the tribes diversify their holdings and the hotel company reach out to minorities.

Four Fires debuted the $43 million Residence Inn by Marriott Capitol this week. The hotel is located near the new National Museum of the American Indian, the Department of Health and Human Services and Congressional buildings.

The tribes involved are the Oneida Nation and the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, both of Wisconsin, and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians, both of California. Tribal leaders say it is important to diversify because gaming will not always be an option.

For Marriott, the company plans to invest $1 billion to advance diversity initiatives. The goal is to increase minority ownership of Marriott properties.
