Abramoff Scandal
Editorial: Return money to Alabama-Coushattas

" Jack Abramoff made the Alabama-Coushatta Indian tribe an unwitting associate in his game of kickbacks. We think the tribe deserves payback.

Alabama-Coushatta leaders said this week that they have never met Abramoff, the lobbyist who is at the center of a federal campaign finance investigation after admitting to prosecutors that he has broken the law on numerous occasions. It's apparent, however, that Abramoff was quite familiar with the Alabama-Coushatta.

Based on an Associated Press report, and our interview Tuesday with tribal leaders and attorneys, Abramoff used the Tigua tribe of El Paso to convince the Alabama-Coushatta to give $50,000 to a charity run by Abramoff. What the Alabama-Coushatta didn't know was that they were handing the money over to a man who had been working behind the scenes to help shut down their new casino near Livingston. That $50,000 check was cashed on July 24, 2002, the day the tribe was forced to shutter its casino."
