Rep. Herseth leads Lakota candidate in latest poll

Rep. Stephanie Herseth (D-South Dakota) leads opponent Bruce Whalen, a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, by 60 percent to 26 percent in the latest poll.

Herseth also leads Whalen in campaign funds. She had more than $1.1 million in receipts, compared to $84,000 for Whalen.

Herseth is popular among tribal members. She won the overwhelming majority of reservation votes in all of the elections.

Whalen hopes to ramp up his campaign as the November 7 election approaches. He opened a new campaign office and plans to raise more funds.
