Two governments now competing at Pine Ridge

As of Tuesday, the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has two governments competing for power on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

John Yellow Bird Steele was sworn in as president, along with several other recently elected leaders. They intend to move into the tribal headquarters today.

But Alex White Plume still claims he is president. Along with his supporters, he's holed up in the tribal offices and says he will follow court rulings that paved the way for an entirely new election.

The dispute arose after White Plume was taken off the November 7 ballot. He had a criminal conviction that made him ineligible for public office.

Yellow Bird Steele, who had trailed White Plume in the primary, ended up winning the election. That's when White Plume started his effort to nullify the results and call for a new primary and general election.
