Ousted Hopi chairman to challenge removal

Ben Nuvamsa, the ousted chairman of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona, is trying to get his job back.

Nuvamsa was removed by the tribal council after less than a month as chairman. At issue was whether he satisfied the residency requirements to hold public office on the reservation.

Nuvamsa is taking his case to the Hopi Supreme Court. He says the council lacked the authority to nullify the results of an election by the people.

Nuvamsa is the second chairman removed by the tribal council. Ivan Sydney was kicked out last year after an alcohol-related incident.
