Steve Fool Bear: An Indian amid the 'Fighting Sioux' debate

"I arrived in Grand Forks as a UND student with many assumptions about the campus atmosphere. I formed my opinion based on hearsay from American Indian students — information from both sides that proved to be skewed.

For example, the claim that the campus was hostile and abusive to American Indians proved false. I’ve never experienced anything remotely close to such treatment.

But other claims had suggested that anti-logo American Indian programs would discriminate against pro-logo American Indian students. This, too, proved to be false.

American Indian Student Services, based out of the American Indian Center, was one of the accused organizations. I came here thinking that pro-logo American Indian students were not welcome at the center, which many of us assumed was the anti-logo headquarters."
