The city council in Minneapolis is investigating whether it can ban the use of the R-word at the University of Minnesota stadium.

The Minnesota Vikings are using the TCF Bank Stadium while they wait for their own facility to be completed. The team is due to play Washington on November 2 and the university president has already said he doesn't want the R-word used in promotional and other materials.

The university has invited the team to a discussion about the racist name on October 30. The team has not yet responded, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

In October 2007, the Shakopee Tribe donated $12.5 million to the university. Of that amount, $10 million went towards the stadium.
