A Washington NFL player is claiming Cherokee heritage.

Santana Moss posted a picture of his new tattoo on Instagram and thanked the artist for "coming up to bless me wth this Cherokee mural representing my ancestors." In a follow-up radio interview, he said his heritage comes from his mother's side of the family.

“You know, I’ve heard so much about my mom’s side — she [has] a lot of Cherokee Indians in the family, starting back with my grandmother and her mom and their mom — so I just wanted to do something honoring them," Moss said on 106.7 The Fan. "And it came about, and I told him what I wanted — look up some chiefs, look up this and that. And he just put a little mural together for me and he went to work on my leg.”

Moss did not say whether he is enrolled in a Cherokee tribe.
