Action suggested on Pequot Tribe

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2001

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is uncooperative and might need to be forced to be nice through legislation, a member of Congress told a Connecticut paper.

Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.), a critic of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, federal recognition and Indian gaming, said the tribe has not been forthcoming about its land dispute with three towns. But while he said he would consider legislative to force the tribe to cooperate, he declined to give The New London Day any specifics on such a proposal.

The tribe and towns of Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston had been discussing potential solutions to their dispute over 165 acres of trust land and any future requests. But North Stonington and Preston dropped out, saying they were frustrated.

The tribe and Ledyard have continued to meet and want the other towns to come back into the fold.
