Appeals court hears arguments in Kennewick Man case
Thursday, September 11, 2003

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in the Kennewick Man case on Wednesday.

A group of scientists wants to study the 9,000-year-old remains. They won a decision in a lower court and say the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act doesn't apply to bones that old.

Four tribes -- the Umatilla, Colville, Yakama and Nez Perce -- and the federal government are appealing the lower court's decision. The tribes say Kennewick Man is an ancestor while the government is arguing that he is Native American, just not related to anyone at this point.
