Appeals court to hear case against Yucca Mountain
Friday, December 19, 2003

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments January 14 on six lawsuits aimed at stopping the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump in Nevada.

The state filed the suits because it doesn't want the facility. The Department of Energy wants to store up to 44,000 tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste in the mountain.

The facility is located on traditional Western Shoshone land as defined by the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley. Western Shoshone tribal leaders and members oppose the dump. The resevationsof at least two tribes are within driving distance.
