Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

Let's Get Ready to Rumble!
In case you didn't noticed, the 81st Annual Santa Fe Indian Market is taking place this weekend. So if you haven't made your plans, get going soon!

Organized by the good people over at the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, the event will have much of the usual. Lots of arts and lots of your friends. And a very special auction of a classic 1974 Triumph TR6 featuring the work of Hopi / Pueblo artist Dan Namingha and others.

But there's also plenty going on outside of Market. Like the 2002 Native Cinema Showcase, brought to you by the National Museum of the American Indian, Plan B Cinematheque of Santa Fe and the infamous Taos Talking Pictures.

Last year's showing was a great success and this time around, some good films are lined up. You'll definitely want to check out The Business of Fancydancing, based on short stories by Sherman Alexie.

Be sure to watch the screen closely when you do. There's a cameo appearance by your favorite web site!

The very critically acclaimed all-Inuit film The Fast Runner (Atanarjuat) also arrives in Santa Fe for the showcase. If you haven't seen this epic, you're missing out one of the most interesting tales you'll see on screen.

NMAI has published an interview with director Zacharias Kunuk on its web site, for those interested.

If you can't make it to Santa Fe, you might want to try out New York City, where director Chris Eyre will premiere Skins. He showed clips of it at last year's fest and now he's ready for the big time.

As for Santa Fe, every gallery in town will be showing their goods but here's a shameless plug for a hip boutique known simply as HEAT. Pueblo artists / fashion designers / trouble-makers Pilar Agoyo and Virgil Ortiz along with Navajo jeweler Cody Sanderson (look for his booth at Market) are putting on some events at their Plaza shop all weekend and a big fashion show on Saturday, August 17, at a club called The Paramount.

And you can't miss the Native Roots & Rhythms Festival, the Native music showcase. Hosted by our favorite Harlan McKosato, of Native America Calling, GRAMMY-winners Primeaux & Mike, flutist Mary Youngblood and other guests are slated for the August 17 concert.
