BIA takes comments on Hannahville casino

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is taking comments on the off-reservation casino proposed by the Hannahville Tribe of Potawatomi Indians in Michigan.

The tribe wants to build a $243 million casino and hotel complex in Romulus, more than 400 miles from the reservation. The tribe is proceeding with a two-part determination under Section 20 of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan opposes the project, saying the land is part of Chippewa territory. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Michigan) has introduced a bill to block such proposals.

Local officials in Romulus support the casino. They say it will generate jobs and revenue.
