Meskwaki Tribe defeats casino alcohol initiative

Members of the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa voted 166-143 to defeat an initiative to sell liquor at the casino.

About half of the tribe's registered voters turned out to the polls yesterday. They were asked to legalize the sale of alcohol in certain places at the Meskwaki Casino.

The issue was controversial, with many concerned about the negative effects of alcohol on the tribe. But others said the tribe needs to be more competitive with other gaming facilities in the state, all of which offer liquor.
