The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut has passed its own labor law amid efforts to unionize at the Foxwoods Resort Casino.
The tribe intends to use the two-month-old Mashantucket Pequot Labor Relations Law and other tribal laws
at a hearing today. The National Labor Relations Board has been called to the reservation to hear a complaint from casino employees who want to form a union.
The tribe says its laws govern unions on the reservation. The National Labor Relations Act, a federal law, doesn't mention tribes anywhere.
But the NLRB has said it will apply federal law on tribes on a case-by-case basis. Factors include whether a tribal enterprise, such as a casino, employs or impacts non-Indians.
