Shinnecock Nation optimistic on casino bid

The Shinnecock Nation's proposal to build a casino resort at a racetrack is "doable," tribal trustee Lance Gumbs told Newsday.

The tribe and its partner were one of six bidders to operate the Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens under a state contract. Three other tribes -- the Seneca Nation of upstate New York, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut and the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut -- also submitted proposals, drawing criticism from Gumbs.

"They're coming down into our territory," Gumbs told Newsday. "That's totally out of line."

The state-recognized tribe said it will drop its plans for a casino on Long Island if it wins the state contract.
