Voters in Jackson County rejected the off-reservation casino sought by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.
With all precincts counted, The Biloxi Sun Herald said 60 percent of voters said no. Turnout was reportedly heavy in the county.
The referendum was non-binding. It's not clear whether the tribe will pursue the casino though Miko Beasley Denson has indicated he would go forward regardless of the outcome.
The tribe has started the process to use 100 acres in Ocean Springs for a casino. The site is more than 200 miles from the reservation.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs is reviewing the tribe's application. Gov. Haley Barbour (R), who just won a second term in office, has said he will veto the casino.
