NLRB opens hearing into Pequot union challenge

The National Labor Relations Board opened a hearing on Tuesday to determine whether a union can organize at the casino owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut.

The NLRB allowed the United Auto Workers to hold an election at the Foxwoods Resort Casino. A majority of card dealers voted to join the union last November.

The tribe says the election was flawed and cited what it said were mistakes in the balloting and voting process. The tribe also disputes the NLRB's jurisdiction at the casino.

Other employees at Foxwoods are trying to organize. The United Food & Commercial Workers Union is collecting signatures from bartenders, cocktail servers and restaurant workers and the International Union of Operating Engineers is targeting plumbers, electricians and carpenters.
