Letters: For and against off-reservation casino

Letters for an against the off-reservation casino sought by the Bay Mills Indian Community of Michigan.

FOR: "Thanks to Cliff Schrader for his Jan. 18 column on the status of Port Huron's casino approval in Congress. We, in Port Huron, have been given another opportunity to have our voices heard in this matter. We need to be sure that our voices do matter, if we want to see a turnaround of local economy. If you are a resident of Port Huron and haven't read this column with its facts and figures, I recommend you do so. Then, I hope everyone, yes everyone, contacts our representatives in Congress telling them we need something to boost the local economy and without the casino, there is little hope for any boost."

AGAINST: " Is a casino going to cause other business to sprout up? Is the city of Detroit the best example for having a casino? Detroit has become the most dangerous city in our nation. It has just been reported the Detroit School Board spent $1.5 million last year for entertainment purposes. I wonder if some of that was spent at the casino. Have the casinos in Detroit and throughout Michigan helped our unemployment rate, which is the highest in the nation?"
