St. Regis Mohawk Tribe sues newspaper for libel

printer friendly
The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe is accusing The New York Post of libel for editorials that were critical of the tribe's proposed off-reservation casino.

The tribe is seeking $60 million in damages. The lawsuit says editorials published on February 21, 2007, and January 7, 2008, subjected the tribe to "public contempt, ridicule, aversion, and disgrace," The New York Sun reported.

The tribe wanted to build a casino in the Catskills, more than 300 miles from the reservation. The Bush administration rejected the proposal last month and the tribe has since dropped the casnio after its gaming partner announced a rival project.
