Two unions compete for Pequot casino employees

Two labor unions are competing to represent employees at the casino owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut.

The United Auto Workers and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers want to organize among slot machine technicians at the Foxwoods Resort Casino. Both filed petitions with the National Labor Relations Board to hold a union election.

The dispute could delay an NLRB hearing on the petitions. Both unions belong to the AFL-CIO, which could step in and resolve the issue.

In related news, the tribe reported an $8.3 million decrease in slot machine revenue from March 2007 to March 2008.
